As independent senior living solutions continue to incorporate new technologies and services to keep the elderly well-monitored and connected to their friends and families, it appears the medical community is doing the same. In December 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was approving the first-ever drug trial to be conducted via telemonitoring.

The blood pressure drug lisinopril, which is produced by a New York-based biopharmaceutical company called Transparency Life Sciences (TLS), was awarded Investigational New Drug status by the FDA after initial trial processes proved successful. TLS is now moving to a Phase 2a remote monitoring trial with lisinopril, which is designed for use by patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS).

The company intends to include 180 MS patients in the 12-month trial, during which time it will keep track of vital signs by having the participants wear monitors. Additionally, researchers will also have regular video interaction with patients in order to see their progress.

"This will increase the quality and quantity of data, and reduce the burden on patients," said John Holland, senior vice president for the company conducting the telemonitoring. "Frequent data collection at home is also expected to increase patient safety, because if a side effect were to appear, researchers will know about it sooner."

Using the latest technologies to improve remote communications is one of the ways that Independa is making independent living for seniors easier and more cost-effective. Our Caregiver Web App helps assisted living staff commit more time and resources to a higher number of individuals by conducting calls, placing reminders and performing other tasks on care recipients' personal devices. Meanwhile, Angela, our premier social engagement interface, gives aging individuals access to Facebook, video chat and other communication tools through one easy-to-use location on either the television.
