As the White House Conference on Aging kicks off in Tampa, Florida, the convention will shine a light on important issues individuals face as they get older. One of the most pressing matters attendees will discuss is the challenges and benefits of aging in place.

“Long-term services and supports help older adults and people with disabilities accomplish everyday tasks such as bathing, dressing, preparing a meal, or balancing a checkbook,” explains the conference website. “In many cases, assistance with just a few of these tasks help older adults remain independent in their own home in the community, which a majority of older Americans prefer.”

Facilitating a national dialogue about the needs and intentions of older people is critical to gaining support for programs that foster community and connection in aging populations. Some of the topics that will be addressed at the conference are elder justice, financial matters, health care and structured support for individuals who choose to age in place. By convening experts in the field, the White House aims to lead thought and promote visibility for older people.

The conference is also requesting that citizens write in, sharing their stories of aging. To do this, visit the “Get Involved” page of the website to submit your experience for conference attendees to consider. The more people weigh in on matters affecting them at home, the more easily policymakers can respond to the concerns of everyday people. Caregivers and care recipients who are interested in learning more about the conference can follow this blog, which provides updates about speakers, panels and other events.
